TRIOLOGY'S NEW PROGRAM 2005 - KALEIDOSCOPE

KALEIDOSCOPE

Who isn’t already familiar through children with the fascinating mechanical and virtual world of kaleidoscopes?  A seemingly banal object through the interaction of symmetry and light takes on endless vibrant beautiful forms.

Various musical traditions are examined and deconstructed by TRIOLOGY, by looking at them through their own personal Kaleidoscope in a completely new light. Elements of the origins of the group’s members are explored and drive this creative exchange of cultures.

In their own musical microcosm, Aleksey Igudesmans Slavic-Jewish roots are seen through the cosmopolitan Anglo Saxon perspective of Daisy Jopling. Her enthusiasm for classical chamber music and jazz are reflected through Tristan Schulzes Central European cultural understanding, which is seen  through an East German filter.  His love of Bach and Messiaen is, again commented on by Aleksey Igudesman’s, partly humoristic, partly philosophical favorite combination of spoken word and music.

TRIOLOGY'S NEW PROGRAM 2005 - THE INDIA EXPERIENCE

THE INDIA EXPERIENCE

The strong impression India made on Europe's intellectual life in the early 19th century is well known, described and documented. Hegel and Schopenhauer studied Indian philosophy; Goethe and Heine wrote poems on Indian subjects, Rückert and the brothers Schlegel translated ancient Sanskrit texts. In more recent popular culture the Beatles touched upon certain sounds of India, John McLaughlin mixed it with jazz.

TRIOLOGY has also been fascinated by this rich and varied culture and spent the beginning of 2005, together with filmmaker Jasmina Hajdany, one month in Varanasi, India, the old holy city at the river Ganges. For cellist Tristan Schulze, this was already the third visit to India.

The result is a combination of Indian and European worlds of sound, interacting with visual material filmed in both places, complimenting and interacting with the music.

TRIOLOGY fuses these cultures, using all senses, breaking free from the regular form of a concert performance and taking it far beyond.

TRIOLOGY CONCERTO FOR TRIOLOGY AND ORCHESTRA by Tristan Schulze

CONCERTO FOR TRIOLOGY AND ORCHESTRA by Tristan Schulze

This is a concerto in 4 movements composed by TRISTAN SCHULZE, lasting approximately 30 minutes. It is a virtuoso piece that puts TRIOLOGY together with an orchestra and exposes the versatility of this extraordinary trio without compromising the overall shape of a big symphonic work.
1.The first movement is an "OSTINATO", at times fugal, at others Messianesque, with elements of African and Caribbean music.
2.The second movement is a very humorous "Scherzo", that quotes Austrian folk music, farm noises, Puccini, Klezmer, Czardas, Haydn and Penderecki.
3.The third movement is a "PASSACAGLIA" in baroque style, which keeps on turning into jazz, minimal music, Piazzolla, and finally a Bachlike chorale, sung and played simultaniously by the entire orchestra.
4.The fourth movement is entitled "FINALE". Rhythmically the most complex, it delves yet again shortly into jazz, this time with a little more swing. It is often driven with a Bartok-like energy, culminating in a cadenza for TRIOLOGY in flamenco style. Interrupted by the orchestra, the trio then jumps from jazz to Indian, to Jewish and finishes with ferocious cascades of semiquavers!
